 Contemporary Chandeliers - Functionally Artistic
Chandeliers are light fixtures that have roots dating back centuries to ancient France and used to illuminate such grand buildings like cathedrals, castles, and other large structures of the late Dark Ages and beyond. Therefore, the thought of truly tasteful contemporary chandeliers capturing the unparalleled sophistication and elegance of the classic chandelier might seem to be a bit of stretch for most of us. After all, how can contemporary light fixtures possibly recreate the ornate craftsmanship and use of exquisite materials for which traditional chandeliers are renowned for?
Some types of and styles of modern chandeliers could indeed be considered minimalist and therefore not in keeping with the regal flair typical to traditional fixtures. In a very traditional décor like Victorian, a more ornate and stylistically appropriate fixture should certainly be considered the first option when buying fixtures. But for Mission style and a number of traditionally “non-contemporary” design styles, the use of a contemporary chandelier can complement and beautify the surroundings with lustrous illumination while enhancing the entire space.
The use of geometric patterns and clean lines are also central features common on many contemporary light fixtures. These characteristics tend to complement Mission and Prairie Style homes perfectly. The use of a contemporary light fixture like the chandelier will work in these styles so long as they are chosen carefully and properly coordinated.
If the chandelier already complements the style of the home itself, then the next step is to look at all of the furniture that will remain in the space. These furnishings must be taken into full account when shopping for any light fixtures. It is often a good idea to try and coordinate the color scheme(s) of the room with that of the chandelier. Accents commonly used in contemporary light fixtures, such as nickel, silver, gold, and stainless steel—these can potentially be coordinated with other decorative elements in the space like: fireplace tools, basket holders, silverware, pots and pans, etc.
Finally, because you never want to illuminate any space with a single light fixture as it will increase the likelihood of either glare or dark spots, you also should coordinate the chandelier with any other fixtures in the room. Table and desk lamps, wall sconces, torchieres, and even buffet lamps should all accentuate the materials, style, and design of the contemporary chandelier. This will actually harmonize the entire area and the use of multiple fixtures will bring balance and add functionality to the space. Contemporary chandeliers may be adaptations of formerly ornate and grand ancestors, but they can still be used in just about any décor when properly selected and coordinated with the home, surrounding décor, and other light fixtures.
